Guyana names 18-man squad for Barbados friendly

GEORGETOWN, Guyana – Midfielder Christopher Nurse will again lead Guyana following the announcement of the Golden Jaguars’ 18-player roster for Sunday’s international friendly against host Barbados.

The 30-year-old captain scored against the Barbadians when the sides last met on October 7, 2011, in a CONCACAF second-round qualifier for Brazil 2014, a 2-0 win for Guyana on the road.

“The players all worked hard displaying tremendous enthusiasm and discipline,” said head coach Jamaal Shabazz, referring to the team’s recent training camp.  “It was also very instructive that the Normalization Committee ensured all the players were paid their per diem/stipends before they left camp.  This is a huge sign of their commitment to players’ welfare and professional approach.”

On the team selection, Shabazz said that those chosen were viewed by the technical staff as being more ready from fitness and tactical perspectives.

"It's a good blend of youth and experience with more than half the squad under 25,” Shabazz continued.  “At this point there are no more foreign or local players.  The selected squad is in fact the Guyana national team.”

The down-to-earth manager also noted that the encounter will reveal the team’s current status.

“Because of the heights we want to take Guyana football, we need to keep it real as to where we are right now,” finished the 51-year-old.  “The Barbados game will not lie, it will tell the truth in the results and the scoreline.  Before we can go anywhere, we first have to know where we are.  This game on Sunday will tell us that.”
