MEXICO CITY, Mexico – Club America and Tigres have met in two of the last three Liga MX Apertura finals, each lifting the trophy once.

Their playoff rivalry will be renewed Wednesday, when they square off in the first leg of the 2017 Apertura semifinals at the Estadio Azteca.

The Aguilas, however, enter the contest without having scored a goal in their last two outings. That’s something head coach Miguel Herrera wants to change.

“The greatest strength we have is that we are a solid team,” the 49-year-old said. “We have not scored goals, but neither have we conceded them and that gives us the best chance against the opponent.”

There’s a lot of truth in Herrera’s statement. Club America has not netted more than one goal in six straight outings, yielding two total goals. Defensively, though, it has been impressive, posting three consecutive clean sheets.

The sides’ regular-season encounter ended in a 2-2 draw at the Azteca. Enner Valencia netted twice for Tigres, while William Da Silva and Alejandro Diaz struck for the host.

Herrera know that his squad is facing a serious challenge in its bid for a 13th title.

“Tigres have two squads,” he finished. “I see no weakness. Hopefully, it can be found. [Head coach Ricardo Ferretti] has designed a great squad to have all those options.”
