NEW DELHI, India – A historic performance by Tim Weah helped the United States earn a 5-0 win over Paraguay on Monday to advance to the quarterfinals of a FIFA U-17 World Cup for the first time since 2005.

The 17-year-old forward became the first American to score three goals in a World Cup knockout-round match.

Midfielder Andrew Carleton added a goal and registered two assists, while team captain Josh Sargent also found the back of the net in front of 34,895 fans at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

Weah put the U.S. ahead 1-0 in the 19th minute of the Round of 16 encounter, doing well to stick out his left foot from seven yards to direct Ayo Akinola’s right-sided cross past helpless goalkeeper Diego Huesca,

The score remained that way until eight minutes into the second half, when Weah received a pass on the left from Indiana Vassilev and kept space between a pair of Paraguayan defenders, before firing a right-footed shot into the upper-right corner.

Ten minutes later, Sargent found Carleton just inside the top of the penalty area and the impressive Atlanta United product first-timed the pass with his right foot beyond the left-diving diving Huesca to make it 3-0.

Sargent increased the lead in 74th minute with a venomous right-footed finish from 13-yards out, before Weah punctuated the scoreline in the 77th minute thanks to Carleton’s instinctive feed from the right side of the box.
